“As a part of the growth of the football club it was felt that we needed to complete the link between the youth and the adults football by introducing this age group” said Barrie Wade, Club Secretary. “We know there are plenty of boys of this age in the Bay Area that want to play at this level, so we are hoping there is someone out there wanting to manage this age group and take the club forward” he added.

Anyone interested in playing or managing the team are asked to phone 01983 864051 and leave a message for the attention of Barrie Wade and the club will call you back.

Over the last two weeks, the fund raising committee, consisting of Ian Bennett, Phil Lancey and Barrie Wade have spent a considerable amount of time at the club carrying out a thorough spring clean. The club has been cleaned from top to bottom and has been given a new coat of pain internally.

“With a new carpet and dance floor planned for May time, and with the whole of the club now looking fresh and revived, Members will hopefully appreciate the efforts put in” said Phil Lancey.

“The club is better and smarter than ever before and therefore hopefully be used by more people” added Ian Bennett.

As manager of the First Team my job is to analyse and keep an eye on the running of the club, so I am taking this time to look at the season so far both from a footballing view and a club view.

As we run into Christmas it looks promising and we have a lot of new young blood coming into the club.

I am also glad to see some very good people in important positions within the club. I think the club has a very bright future, however it will take time to get right, but we will get there if those people concentrate on their job.

As for the players, they have to understand that the club is in transition with new players and new staff throughout. We need the players to chip in and help out with a lot of commitment on and off the pitch.

I am not happy with the doom and gloom around the club, which I understand is because of players leaving to play for bigger clubs on the Island. Ian Seabrooke, Prez, Weller, Rusty, Paige and Adam Tuck to name a few, but I know their heart is still at the club, buts its up to them.

As Manager I think we will compete with the Newport & Cowes sides in the coming years. We have a great youth set up which is starting to come through with the likes of Rob Chard,Billy,William Bartley, Jackson Scutt, Tod Young & more & the Shanklin side is looking good.

But the big word missing from the playing side is commitment, passion and loyalty. Players must support the club more, from Lads, lasses and Youth, because at the end of the day the club is yours, so fingers out and support the club.

So the first support you can give the club is on Saturday 20th December when we will be holding our Christmas draw, it starts at 7.30 and will be a good evening.

Thank you

The Gaffa

SHANKLIN FC officials fear a young soccer player will be seriously injured by broken glass or a discarded syringe on the County Ground, despite the pitch being scoured.
Assistant under-14s’ manager Duncan Smith told a public meeting on Thursday last week: “We have had one child fall over and cut himself and then go into dog’s mess. I am terrified one of our children will be seriously injured.”
The club called a public meeting to address a mounting tide of vandalism and rubbish and to give nearby residents a chance to have their say.
The club says if it is forced to give up, 120 youngsters will be left with nothing to do.
Thursday’s meeting was told by club secretary Barrie Wade negotiations were taking place with the Isle of Wight Council for the club to take on management of the ground.
It was unable to ban dogs from what was public open space but wanted to work with owners so they used the perimeter. He backed a dog walking fenced “corridor” surrounding the school field.
Town centre warden Mick Howard said he had encouraging responses from dog owners to his appeals for co-operation. He took evidence from rubbish bags dumped at the club’s litter bin to track down who was responsible for leaving it.
The meeting was told vandalism had reached such proportions there were fears the club would not be able to maintain its changing room and toilet facilities.
“Without that, under health and safety, we won’t be able to keep going,” said Mr Wade.
Sgt Rachael Roscoe told the meeting police were seeking the co-operation of Sandown, Shanklin and Lake off-licences banning the sale of alcohol to under-21s on Fridays and Saturdays. Officers regularly patrolled the County Ground to cut teen drinking and damage.
She agreed to make Smartwater, which uniquely and indelibly marks culprits, available to the club.
“It is about reclaiming the area, making it safe for families again,” she said.
Stuart Love Isle of Wight Council director of environment and neighbourhoods, said: “We can and do take action against people responsible for dropping litter and letting their dogs foul.
“As a result of these latest concerns we have agreed with the police and the town centre manager to step up this action.
“We will continue to work closely with the community in Shanklin to maintain the County Ground, and we would encourage anybody who is aware of abuse on the site to let us know about it.”

A FOOTBALL club is calling foul on vandals who are destroying the facilities and thoughtless pet owners who do not clean up after their dogs on the soccer pitches.
Shanklin Football Club feels it is easier to win matches at the moment than it is to beat regular attacks on the clubhouse and the children’s changing rooms, and keep players safe from injury.
Before matches can be played, volunteers clear broken glass and dog mess from the pitches. Discarded used drug needles have been found around the junior changing rooms. The facility is used by eight to 16 year olds.
Bicycles and kids’ scooters are often taken from the clubhouse and changing room roofs, doors are kicked in, drainpipes pulled apart, a TV aerial snapped off and concrete paths destroyed. Vandals even broke a security light, installed to deter them.
Barrie Wade, the club’s secretary, blamed the damage on youths.
He said: “It’s frustrating because the club can’t develop, because we have to fork out on repairs, which runs into thousands of pounds annually. We are on a treadmill.
“The money we get from fundraising and membership fees goes into putting right the things these mindless idiots do.
“Dog fouling is a real problem. There’s plenty of dog bins about but many dog walkers never bother to use them. It’s incredibly irresponsible and puts children at risk of picking up diseases.
“There have been instances where children have fallen in it. We spend time cleaning up as best we can before games.”
• The club has invited the police, Shanklin Town Council and the Isle of Wight Council to discuss these issues at a public meeting at the County Ground clubhouse at 10am on Thursday, October 23.
