Shanklin U10’s showed what a good footballing team they are becoming with a fantastic win over Seaview. The scoreline was not important, but the way the lads played, the way they listened and more importantly the way they did what they were asked was fantastic.

I’m not going to write about who scored but instead write about who played well and how well they are improving. Luke in goal is still continuing to improve week in week out, and although he didnt have much to do in this match, when he was called upon to make a save he was ready and switched on.

The defence, consisting of Harry and skipper Sam were outstanding in this match. They were asked to be confident on the ball, have a touch and look up and think about their options. They were also asked to think about not just kicking the ball out, but to think about playing the ball out of defence, if the situation allowed. I can honestly say that they did this on several occassions, however when they were required to clear the ball, they recognised this and did it. Well done you two.

The midfield of Jack, Lewis, Reece and Ashley were all brilliant throughout this match. Yet again, the times that they put their foot on the ball and looked for a pass rather than just kicking the ball was far beyond their young age. They are also getting use to the fact that they are an extra line of support when attacking and an extra line of defence when we are defending. Although their workrate could have been a little bit quicker at times, generally they performed well and made a great contribution to the team.

Our lone striker was Dylan. He is our little whippet, always battling and a very hard player to mark. Dylan is probably the best player in the team for listening and taking things on board. He is a very intelligent footballer and grows every week. Although Dylan sometimes has a habbit of turning into trouble rather than looking up and playing the ball out to a team mate, he will without doubt become a prolific goal scorer as he develops.

All in all this was one of the best team performances I have seen this team play. The lads are now looking to play football rather than just kick the ball. Keep it up lads and roll on 11 aside football.

From the first whistle Shanklins midfield showed they were more than up for it with some some hard tackling and a never say die attitude. Defensively solid was the name of the game at the back and up front problems were being posed to an Oakfield defence that was holding on.

The break came when Lewis Wade found himself on the floor on the touchline just inside the penalty area and had the awareness to swing his right foot at the ball, passing it across the face of the goal to a waiting Dylan Leyman who blasted it into the back of the net.

This was a game that was probably the best all round performance by the under 10s this season, quick decisions from our keeper Luke playing out from the back, a `park the bus` performance from the defence by Sam and Harry, A new trio in midfield of Jack, Billy and Lewis that were absolutely mustard and of course Dylan up front who terrifies defences with his pace and movement. Credit must also go to Ashley who played three different position and showed his adapatability and commitment.

Man of the Match was Jack Hill for his tireless effort in the second half while playing in an unfamiliar position

This had to be one of the coldest days I have ever had to stand and watch football, and that was with 3 jumpers on, so god only knows how the lads managed to survive 50 minutes of football, but, credit must go to both sets of players who ran their legs off and gave the reasonable crowd something to smile about.

Even though Shanklin cam out 6 – 3 winners, West Wight never stopped battling and on more than 3 occasions scared Shanklin with their attacking play. Shanklin started off with one players at the back, the reliable Harry Rose, 3 in midfield, Dillon Lehman, Lewis Wade, Same Phelps, and 2 up front in the shape of Jack Hill and Billy Thornton.

On paper this may have looked like a good system, but as West Wight had no real shape to their play, Harry Rose was left exposed with 2 or more players to mark on more than one occasion. That said it was Shanklin that started the stronger.

This was for the period of the match an end to end game and Shanklin were assisted to the win with goals from Billy Thonton, Jack Hill and 4 from man of the match Dillion Lehman.

A good all round performance from a team that is looking impressive and should, with a few more players become a team to be reckoned with.

One further mention must go to Luke Wederkop who pulled off 2 or 3 cracking saves.

Well done lads.

The first 15/20 minutes of this match ended any hope of the under 10s progressing in the Island Cup, Shanklin were quite simply blown away by an inspired Oakfield team that played outstanding football from the first whistle. Their movement and passing were too much for a battling Shanklin team that fought every inch of the way up to half time but found themselves 4 – 0 down. Jamie O`Rourke said after the game that their performance in the first half was the best he had ever seen them play and I have to say that I dont feel there is a team in this age group that could have lived with them.

Credit to Shanklin who came out in the second half with all guns blazing and scored two quick goals thru Dylan Lehman and Shanklins man of the match Lewis Wade. There would have been a few more except for a stunning performance from the Oakfield keeper. However, Oakfield could not be denied and they too responded with two goals just when Shanklin looked to be getting back into the game.

The second half performance showed that we can compete but need to work on starting matches with the same concentration and passion that we finish games and not wait until its backs to the wall before we start to play.

Good luck to Oakfield for the rest of their cup campaign.

In football there are days when most of the team are not on their game, when nothing goes right, and when winning is never an option, today was one of these days.

In fact this report is pretty hard for me to write because there is nothing that really happened to put down in text. That said, East Cowes did play some good football, and deserved their win. There were several performances that warrant a quick mention. Luke Wederkop in goal tried new things, quick goal kicks which allowed Shanklin to play football from the back. Lewis Wade for a battling second half, Sam Phelps for a reasonably steady game, and Reece Phillips for the goal of the match.

All in all one to forget, however I am a great believer that in everything comes a positive, and this is no different. If the boys can learn form their errors then they will take more out of this game than they will realise.

This was a match that was full of good end to end football and was an advert for what youth football should be about.

In windy conditions both teams did their best to play football, and it wasn’t long before both teams realised that they had to play the ball along the floor if they were going to get anything out of the match.

As usual Sam Phelps was steady at the back along side Harry Rose and neither put a foot wrong all match. Lewis Wade looked strong in the middle of the park, playing some excellent through balls to his team mates up front. Billy Tornton and Jack Hill were a strong duo up front and Reece Phillips and Ashley Chamberlain did well out wide.

Shanklin throughout the first half looked the stronger and after 23 minutes were rewarded when substitute Dillion Lehman did well to beat the impressive Brading goalkeeper.

The second half started like the first had ended with Shanklin slightly the stronger. The Brading goal was being bombarded with shots from sam Phelps and Jack Hill but although on target, none were going in thanks to the Brading Keeper. Lewis Wade was now on top of his game, playing a strong role in between the back line and the strikers.

For some reason Shanklin, still looking comfortable at 1-0, decided that they were going to take their foot off the pedal slightly, and Brading did well to start piling on the pressure, and their hard work paid off in the 32nd minute when they were rewarded with an equaliser. A good run down the left hand side saw the Brading forward slot the ball past the advancing Luke Wederkop in goal.

Still piling on the pressure, Brading capatilised again 5 minutes later when they scored their second goal to take the lead.

Rattled by this, Shanklin picked their game up again, and started to attack the Brading goal minute by minute. Dillion Lehman looked impressive on the ball and made an excellent run down the left hand side and a good shot produced another goal stopping save. From the resulting corner, a quick thinking Jack Hill played the corner short to Lewis Wade on the edge of the box. Wade shot only to see his effort blocked by a defender, However Lewis Wade was quickest to react, picked the ball up and took it wide on the left, the ball was crossed and Billy Thornton connected first time to see his shot fly just over the crossbar.

Shanklin were now running out of time and were pushin hard for the equaliser. Jack Hill made a run on the right, cut in and let fly with a left foot cracker, only to see the Brading Keeper pull of what was the save of the match, tipping it around the post with a diving save.

From the resulting corner, the ball was cleared and bobbled around the box, with no one able to get it clear. With seconds left the ball ended up at Reece Phillips feet. He took a shot to which the keeper just got his left hand to it. However, unfortunately for Brading the keepers save hit a defender and as he tried to clear it it went into the net. As Brading took the resulting kick off the referee blew for full time.

Shanklin yet again showed a battling spirit and a draw was a fair result.

Shanklins man of the match was Reece Phillips, chosen by manager Sean Thornton, however the man of the match really was the Brading goalkeeper who kept his team in the match time and time again.

Shanklin Squad:

L Wederkop, L Wade, S Phelps, J Hill, B Thornton, D Lehman, A Chamberlain, L Bishton,

H Rose, R Phillips.

Shanklin under 10’s travelled to Oakfield on Sunday and gave what can only be described as a first class performance. “It was the best football we have played” said manager Sean Thornton.

That said, in the first half, Shanklin, although trying to play football, were met by a strong Oakfield set up managed by Jamie O’rourke. Both teams pressed and the proud parents saw some excellent end to end football.

It is fair to say that Oakfield had the stronger first half and this was rewarded by a 2-0 half time lead.

The team talk at half time must have worked, because Shanklin came out fighting and comments on the side lines such as “we only need one and the lads will be lifted” were proved right when the game turned in the space of 10 minutes.

Shanklin were pushing hard and corner after corner was eventually rewarded when jack Hill scored the first of his two goals. Soon after Ashley Chamberlain scored with a back heel, closely followed by Dillion Lehman, who had come on as a substitute and showed excellent skills. Lewis Wade had now woken up after a slow start and had several good shots on goal, making the Oakfield keeper work for his pocket money. The Shanklin defence was being guarded well by Harry Rose and Skipper Sam Phelps.

With 5 minutes to go, the score at 3-2 and Oakfield putting a lot of pressure on Shanklins goal, Luke Wethercott was called on several times to make good saves, one of which was a full stretch dive to his right tipping the ball around the post.

Oakfiled got another corner which was collected by Luke, who quickly kicked it up to Jack Hill, who was now the only player in the Oakfield half. With no option but to go alone Jack was cheered on by the Shanklin supporters and with a cracking left foot shot from approx. 15m out Jack drilled a left foot drive into the Oakfield net, putting the game beyond Oakfields reach.

Excellent performances by all players in the team, with special mention to Jack Hill (2) and steady Sam Phelps at the back and Luke Wethercott in goal, saw Shanklin come out deserved 4-2 winners.

Man of the match was chosen by Shanklin Secretary Barrie Wade and this went to Harry Rose.

Barrie congratualted all players on an excellent performance and said “Harry was consistent throughout the match and showed some good touches and top class defending, he is a player that is improving every game and deserves the man of the match award.”
